Making Kathmandu Breathable is an immersive, project-based course designed for young Nepali students aged 18 to 22 in Kathmandu and other urban cities of Nepal. Using constructivist and situated learning principles, this course empowers learners to design and implement sustainable interventions for Kathmandu’s air pollution crisis. Through a hybrid format of in-person meetings, asynchronous materials, and synchronous sessions, learners will collaborate with Nepali climate and environmental experts to develop real-world Interventions

Course Details

  • Course Code: TC-MKB 101

  • Format: Hybrid (in-person meetings, asynchronous materials, and synchronous sessions)

  • Collaboration: Delivered in partnership with Nepali climate and environmental actors, educators, and urban sustainability practitioners

Learning Objectives

  • Identify similar air pollution issues and solutions implemented in other cities worldwide.

  • Develop a viable prototype of a sustainable Intervention to address air pollution in Kathmandu or other urban areas of Nepal.

The Course Team

Course Structure

The course is divided into six modules:

  1. What is in the air? - Explore air quality issues in Kathmandu and their impact on daily life.

  2. Where does this air come from? - Investigate the key sources of air pollution in the region.

  3. Current initiatives and global best practices - Study ongoing efforts in Kathmandu and successful strategies from around the world.

  4. Identifying areas for intervention - Analyze and pinpoint critical areas where interventions can make a difference.

  5. Choosing an intervention area - Select a specific focus area for developing a solution.

  6. Designing an Intervention - Work individually or in teams to create a feasible solution to the chosen problem.

  7. Rolling an Intervention

 

Each module includes asynchronous readings, videos, and synchronous discussions and activities to enhance learning.

 

Who Should Enroll

This course is designed for young Nepali students aged 18 to 22 living in Kathmandu or other urban cities in Nepal who are passionate about environmental sustainability and eager to make a tangible impact. You do not have to be an environment student.

Projects

Learners will work on projects aimed at creating sustainable solutions for air pollution, with the opportunity to pitch their initiatives to stakeholders such as the Kathmandu metropolitan city, content creators, or non-profit organizations.
